Al woke up early to go to work in order to come home early so we didn't join her for breakfast. Our former Au Pair, Anika, lives in Hamburg, Germany and we were planning to drive and visit her this weekend.
The kids and I slept in and when we woke up we hung out and played some cards and worked on the puzzle. We packed up our clothes and other stuff we needed for the weekend. It was a lazy morning. We then met Al at the office around 12:00 PM and walked over to Avis to rent a car. Our plan was to rent a car from July 6th to August 8th so we would have it for the remainder of our trip in Germany. They didn't have a car available yet so we went and had lunch over at the KO Gallery. We were able to get Zach a plain cheese sandwich. I had a nice lox sandwich with lettuce and horseradish. We chowed down lunch and hustled back to Avis. They finally had a car available for us; a Volvo XC 90 SUV. I drove Al to work and headed back to the apartment garage. This is the wrong car for this garage (see picture on right). The car is huge and the garage is tiny. It took about 10 minutes to park the car.
We decided to go downstairs and play in the Cave area for awhile and do the sauna. We had our pillow fight and Zach got hit in the head at least 3 times and cried each time. We then came back to the room and showered up before hitting the road. Al came home around 5:30 PM and then we hit the road around 6:15 PM. It was 400km (4 hrs) to Hamburg. When we got in the car we had a tough time with the Nav system. At first it would not find our location and then we couldn't get the voice activated. We had to pull over three times (the cops moved us one time) before we got it working. We finally made it to the highway and drove for about 45 minutes before we had our first bathroom break. I was cruising around 90 mph and BMW's, Audi's and Mercedes were blowing by me at 120+ mph. We had packed some sliced chicken/cheese sandwiches for the road but that didn't last long. We stopped at a roadside stop and hit the bathroom and picked up some chicken nuggets with fries. Then it got dark out and the rains started again (perfect driving conditions). When we made it to Hamburg we couldn't find Anika's place and had to call her on the cell. We turned around and called again from a parking lot and then we saw Anika on her balcony across the street. We had made it and it was 12:00AM. It had been close to 2 years since Anika was in Atlanta and everybody was very excited to see each other. Anika had a nice one bedroom apartment. The kids slept on a pull out couch and Al and I slept on a blow up bed. We were all a little wired and the kids went to sleep around 1:00 AM and Al and I about 1:30 AM.
